Photographer’s Note: What happens when a person visits a place he/she had seen only in the media? Probably, he/she will feel something which he/she had never felt before. Something similar happened to me when I visited Germany. It was my first trip to an unknown country. A land with great stories and rich history. A land with beautiful people and picturesque landscapes. A country I had only dreamed of visiting. My first impression? Wherever I went, I felt as if I was travelling through paintings. I just had to turn around and I would see a painting standing in front of me. Though I visited Germany on an assignment as a photo curator, I tried to experience it from a photographer’s perspective. Here are some of the moments and sites from Munich, Erfurt, and a small town called Calw. The first picture, ‘Torn Love’, is from the streets of Munich. It captured my attention because it contains a torn poster of a man and a woman kissing passionately. I felt that, in today’s world, aren’t we surrounded by so many torn stories? The second picture, ‘Old Building and the Bridge’, is also from Munich. In the name of development, we are destroying old monuments, forests, and so many other things. The picture tries to raise the question – why can’t we live side by side with the beautiful old monuments that we already have? Is there no other way to develop cities without destroying the old buildings and monuments? The third picture, ‘Old House in the Alley’, and the fourth picture, ‘The Couple’, are from a medieval town called Erfurt in East Germany. The town is so beautiful that it took me directly into the fairytales. The fifth picture, ‘Past Is Present’, is from a small town called Calw. I liked the idea of how statues of old people from the past have been placed on the street. It feels as if the past still lives side by side with us in our present. The sixth picture, ‘Van Gogh’s Tree’, reminds me of the famous tree from Van Gogh’s painting ‘The Starry Night’. How could I miss capturing it?
