Duc Van Khanh Tran’s two poems

Engine Meditation

Sitting on a motorbike, I

let the wind brush over my face and meditate

with the clouds idly floating in

the sky, their slow current against the

hasty stream of bikes beneath. When life puts me on a bike,

I strive to let the wind override the engines.

I meditate in the bike engines.

At a Sidewalk Café

I sit on a plastic chair and see…

a cup of coffee

on another chair disguised as a table,

the dark black

captivating

the tongue and nose

with its aromatic bitter.

I sit on a plastic chair and see…

an uncle next door

sweeping, sweeping, sweeping

all the dirt and leaves

that accumulated overnight,

slowly preparing for a new morning,

and a bit irritated

at the adjacent sidewalk

full of relaxing coffee and cigarettes.

I sit on a plastic chair and see…

bikes rushing and honking

to race against time,

or with time,

but my time here is different,

comprised of this cup of coffee

and nothing more.

I sit on a plastic chair and see…

a trash bin.

Oh right, I’m on a sidewalk.

I sit on a plastic chair and see…
