Geraldine Cannon’s poem: Something Permanent

Moves through me and feels fluid,

chills and warms at the same time,

being both light and dark, eternally.

The remarkable thing is character,

called to mind, heart, and senses—spirit.

What is remembered and recognized

as individually personal, keeps on being.

Handed down through more than genes,

known characteristics will be carried forward—

changed, as needed—modified by generations,

and those yet to come for as long as they come.

Curious, keep showing up, certain of going on.

Geraldine Cannon teaches English and Creative Writing at the University of Maine, in Fort Kent, ME (USA), under her married name of Becker. Publishing before she married, Cannon hails from the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, in South Carolina. She now lives and works with her husband at the other end of that mountain range, where she continues to be inspired by nature, science, and psychology–along with literature, of course. She hopes you enjoy these poems.
