Flying high in the sky,
The kite says, “Hey! Hi!
Can you climb this high,
Oh, little butterfly?”
“I’m much bigger and quicker,
Colourful and bright,
But you are too fragile,
Too little in size.”
“If you could get up here
By chance, at once,
We’d both fly together,
We’d share a dance.”
The butterfly mocks the kite:
“Who are you, friend?
You may be flying now,
But this is sure to end.”
“You’re on a shorter journey;
Fly as you wish.
If someone pulls your string,
It’s simply to finish.”
“Listen to me, dear kite,
Simply put, my friend:
You must land by night—
That’s where your freedom ends.”
“You’re just a plaything,
Dependent on a thread,
But I’m a natural being,
Free and God-made.”
“Never be too arrogant;
Don’t mock anyone.
Learn to stand on your own,
Then come and have some fun.”
