Shokhrukh Usmonov’s translation of Nilufar Shakarova’s poem: Qayda-saa-an?! – Where Are You?! (Uzbek to English)

Editor’s Note: It is worth mentioning that these poems of Nilufar Shakarova are being published for the first time as well. Since DoubleSpeak is an English magazine, hence it is fitting that they are published with their English translations.

Qayda-saa-an?!

Tog’- toshlarga urildi bir sas,

Va samoga ketti yoyilib.

Shivirladi intizor ovoz:

Qaylardasan, ishqqa dohilim…

Huv ko’chalar senga muntazir,

Qadamingga mushtoq, chamasi,

Bu ko’cha ham senga muntazir,

Va bu ko’cha — ko’nglim ko’chasi!

Sen qaydasan, aytgil qay manzil,

Qay kimsalar sen-la, ber darak?!

Va bilginki, biz ayro, ammo

Hislarimiz, qalblar mushtarak!

Qalbimda bor sen uchun uch so’z

Va ularga tishlarim qafas.

Bir hadik bor, seni topguncha

Men o’zimni yo’qotmasam bas!

Where Are You?!

A sound struck the mountains and the stone,

Then spread out, ascending to the sky.

The yearning voice whispered with a moan:

Where are you, my love, to whom I am nigh…

Those far-off lanes await you still,

They long for your footsteps, it seems,

This very street awaits you, until —

And it is the lane of my dreams!

Tell me, where are you, what is your station,

With whom are you now — give me a sign!

And know this: though we are in separation,

Our feelings, our two hearts, still combine!

In my heart for you, there are three words,

Held captive behind my teeth’s cage.

I have one fear, whilst I search for you —

That I may not lose myself upon this stage!
