Myrtle Thomas’ two poems

In the Whisper of my Eyes

I've traced the lines of his face

with my fingers and shone the light

of my eyes across his heart

bound him within the wellspring of my soul.

time and again I've counted the stars resting

in his eyes and the sunlight that follows him

and the horizons bend toward him like praise

no one else sees this beauty but I .

every season of fallen autumn leaves crown his head

and the snows of winter warm under his feet

pring flowers rise and follow his shadow

summer's blooms are so fragrant as he passes.

love has wounded me with its glory – leaving me alive

my soul is both burned and cooled by his touch

this spirit that consumes me blooms like the sun

and a universe of stars bend toward us

when he speaks the wind sings and my heart listens

when he touches me my heart surges with desire

until the flames carry my ashes away

until the day weeps into the morning star.

A Disappearing Land

In between the lines of poetry-

letters. dreams and black ink

wanderings where feet haven’t stepped

there comes a wondering,

if my breath fails me in the night

what if anything will I carry?

a vision or emotions –

memories of starry nights

moonlight falling like snow

maybe it is a vast land

where we carry the love, we knew!

leaving the fingerprints and footprints

of this foreign land behind

stepping through a curtain of light

who but one can judge love ?

only the one whose eyes are like fire

sometimes it’s good to ponder beyond eyes

thinking beyond the heartbeat and the hours

searching always searching

it’s good to write with your heart

of thought and emotion

but I still wonder past one horizon to another

in the moment of nakedness and spiritual eyes

will I see what I left behind ?

to walk where I’ve never walked before?

my ears and eyes search for an ocean of stars

my love we loved truly didn’t we !

when I think of the distance between heartbeats

I shudder and tremble with these visions

my heart too weak to beat

my eyes too tired to see

as my body decays in the ground !

the dreams I dreamed dissolve in vapor

O’ the night with its moonlight and stars

bring me back to reality with its storms

and the raging clouds.
