Eva Petropoulou Lianou’s four poems

1

Freedom,

A word
that holds the meaning of everything…

This is happiness,
this is harmony,
this is respect.

But what do we do?
Humans are killing humans,
humans are manipulating humans.

Freedom,
a game between two birds without wings.

Freedom,
a hope for two hungry stomachs.

Freedom,
a sun waiting to rise…

In our days,
in our century,

we are in need of a second educational system,
to rewrite new words,
or relearn the meaning of the old ones.

2

Women.

I was wondering if I am free.

Do you feel free?

No.

Every day I walk in a street of possibilities and opportunities,

but nobody looks at me
as I am a woman.

It is unspeakable how much a woman is used,

from day one.

A woman needs to educate the child,
to cook for the child,
to teach them how to think, speak,
and act.

A lot for a woman to do,

but what happens after?

A woman’s needs,
a woman’s wishes,
a woman’s words—
an inexistent presence.

Until one day,
you will look in the mirror.

You will see your face,
you will see your heart,
you will see your body,

and you will not recognise it,

because you will be so used—

used by rejection,
used by loneliness,
used by fake people,
used by bad decisions,

without faith.

3

Woman,

You are alive,
a mother,
a daughter.

Women,
we respect each other,
we support each other.

Our power is strong
when we are together.

Woman,
a friend
we never leave in hard times.

Woman,
the creativity,
the poetry,
the art.

Woman,
we must celebrate and respect you every day.

4

We are humans.

We are supposed to build relationships with humans,
not meta-humans,
not animals,
not aliens.

We are supposed to bring peace
to the harmonious world we live in.

But every day I see
a woman hugging a cat or dog,
feeding them,
bathing them,
while babies are left at centres.

Men talk to their dogs about their problems
and prefer to stay with them
instead of going out and meeting a human being.

What is happening to this society of screens?

We are becoming clones of ourselves,
without emotion,
without feelings.

We celebrate and congratulate only our people—our tribe.

What about the others,
those who are doing so much good?

Must we stay silent?
Must we not celebrate their achievements?

Humans need recognition.
Individuals need support at every level,
especially after COVID and all that followed.

But do you think
having only relationships with cats and dogs
is healthy?

I wonder what kind of society we are living in.

We do not even speak to each other,
and when we do,
we carry hate,
we carry negativity,
we carry too much darkness and fear.

So I tell you now:

Get rid of those toxic feelings.

Start reading,
start writing,
start dancing,
start laughing.

Life is short.
