Awuhe Joseph Msughter’s two poems

Fragile Giants

Men are ants building anthills

whose dreams shatter

when they kiss the lips of a foot

Men are spiderwebs, lurking freely

celebrated by winds and mighty flies,

but the visit of a broom brings anxiety

Men are chameleons crowned with

camouflage of colours and a firm grip

yet when visited by heat, colour fades

Men are the sun, which is king of the day

and whose presence sends birds to their nests

but the grip of noon crowns the moon with stars

At last, whatever men are cannot last forever,

as folklore tells great stories of the past

so too will a man’s deeds be told to his children

As the egg is the mother of the hen

so is time the father of happenings

and encounters become the shapers of men

Infected Hearts

Phobia is a virus

that infects hearts

leaving them with

patches and pores

As phobia comes

hearts jump with fright

because dread lies within

so minds become fevered

Thoughts become infected

with cold bubbles lingering

keeping us aware of phobia

willing to tear us apart

The brave become cowards

with no scores to show

for the brain turns blank

and watered dreams shatter

Counsellors say

inhale twice and out

for only you can do what it takes

The heart listens

when we call

and yearns for our warmth
