Sehar Zahid’s three poems

The Guardians of the Nation

Young and unprepared, they left their homes

Leaving their selves behind for a greater cause

At the nation’s call, in times of need

They are ready to sacrifice their being

Without even a second thought

They jump on suicidal bombs

Their mothers anxiously wait for their return

Only to see them wrapped in green

Yet people see their privileges, not sacrifices

They call them out for living on people’s taxes

Yet their ignorant little minds do not realise

The cost of life felt by those left behind

They sleep in peace at night

Thanks to their brothers fighting with all their might

What keeps them going are the sweet memories

Helping them survive the darkness of their lives

The hope of returning home drives them on

Guiding them through their journey and more

Sometimes through the cold nights of Siachen

And at others through the warmth of Karachi

The fire of duty burns inside their hearts

Their jaws tightened, their faces calm

Making no compromise on the country’s integrity

And sparing no one who harms its dignity

What is Love?

What is love?

It can be as strong as a fortress

And as weak as a thin thread

Like fire, its warmth soothes your soul

Yet its blaze can burn you whole

It can be terrifying, yet comforting

It is struck between life and destruction

The very love you trust the most

Is the same that can destroy you the most

Perhaps this love made Sahiban run from home

No wonder this love made Mirza lose his life

Does it give you freedom?

Or make you surrender?

Love is complex, yet simplified

Ashes of Innocence

She was a fragile girl in this doomed world

Her striking beauty became a curse for her

Her family’s love for her never unfurled

Her only mistake was being a girl

She loved, seeking escape from her harsh reality

And left her home, believing love could heal all her wounds

He betrayed her, revealing all his hidden cruelty

Only to set her price and sell her into shadowed rooms

Her soul shattered by wild beasts

Her beauty destroyed by merciless hands

Her life became a living feast of grief

She realised the weight of cruel demands

Her suffering finally ended—but at what cost?

Her being burned alive by those who were supposed to love her most
