Akaayar Aondongu Andrew (Sabe Negu)’s three poems

The Rain Kept Falling

The rain kept falling anyway

On the corrugated roof

We found hide under

And you said you loved it

You left the blanket

That covered our bare selves

Like a beautiful singing bird

Leaving a tree with no trace

To bask in the moment

And feel fresh chills

Run through your spine

Like water through the sea

You lay wild on the old mat

We had under our backs

Like a jolly dog

Playing with her puppies

The winds crept in

Like a careful, spying rodent

Through the ajar door

That allowed us a free passage

You got up, half-obsessed

And shut the door with a hiss

And left with a satisfied smile

That I decided to host

The winds again spilled dust

Right in through the windows

Which just a few moments past

Made ventilation perfect

You restrained your anger

In a gain I felt proud of

And locked the windows

And came back to the old mat

As you reached for a cuddle

With a bare look of affection

I wondered if the love you meant

For the rain was for sure pure

You Shut Your Eyes

You shut your eyes

Against the sight of a little man

Not to see him clear

But to figure your kismet

Then you looked through

Your tinted windowpanes

And saw him a little grave

Alone in a little compound

Then through your sunglasses

You found him brave

Like an alluring cosmic scent

Of virgin orange juice

Yet you went ahead

And peeped into his heart

To glance perhaps at a line

Standing in-between two dots

As all seemed fatally blurred

But right with much might

You shut your eyes again

But to see him in vain gain

Mind you, he who lives

At the bank of a river

Never needs spittle

To wash his hands

In Rooms Apart

We woke up all the same

To our nightgowns

Sitting so dejected

On the tied, cold floor

Of our paid apartment

She looked me in the face

And asked:

“What happened?”

“What happened?”

I retorted

She pulled me closer

Her right arm

Wrapped around my shoulders

And my left arm

Around her shoulders

Our foreheads met

Our eyes communed

Our lips kissed

Our hands, gently

Caressed each other

And we woke up

All alone, in rooms apart

Eyes to the ceiling

And I asked:

“What really happened?”
