llfa Ijlal’s mini album: World’s eighth wonder

Photographer’s note: These photographs were captured by me at my visit to the Sigiriya ancient rock fortress which is situated in the Matale district of Sri Lanka. Considered as the world’s eighth wonder, Sigiriya is a blend of both nature and architecture. It was regarded as a monastery in the 3rd century BC, and it later became a royal residence under King Kasyapa in the 5th century AD. Its entrance which is marked by a giant stone lion, gives it the name “Sigiriya” or the “Lion Rock.” It consists of frescoes, a mirror wall, water gardens, boulder gardens, and terraced gardens and proves to be one of the best urban planning sites of the first millennium. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya emphasizes its cultural significance and rich history despite its age. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it serves as a monument to the natural beauty and enduring legacy of Sri Lanka and invites visitors to experience its ageless wonders.
